Investing in Our Wildlife: Celebrating World Wildlife Day 2025

A World Wildlife Day Toolkit

Every year on March 3rd, we celebrate World Wildlife Day (WWD)—a time to appreciate the incredible biodiversity of our planet and recognize why it’s so important to protect it. This year’s theme, “Investing in Our Planet’s Wildlife”, is all about making sure we have the resources to support conservation, protect ecosystems, and ensure that future generations get to experience the wonder of nature.

Why Biodiversity Matters

Biodiversity is the foundation of life on Earth. The air we breathe, the water we drink, and the food we eat all come from thriving ecosystems that are essential to our survival. But with habitat loss, climate change, and poaching threatening wildlife at alarming rates, we need to take action now. By investing in conservation, we can safeguard the delicate balance of ecosystems and protect endangered species from disappearing forever.

How to Get Involved

Want to do something meaningful this World Wildlife Day? Here are a few easy ways to make a difference:

  • Watch & Learn: The United Nations will host a livestream event from Switzerland, bringing together conservation experts and policymakers. Tune in to learn about global efforts and solutions. Join the livestream here.

    • Note: This event will take place from 10:00AM - 12:00PM Central European Time. For those of us in the United States, that will be fairly early! Still, we can follow up to watch the replay.

  • Explore & Appreciate Nature: Celebrate the day by getting outdoors with your family!

    • Green Hour by NWF: Engage kids in outdoor activities with fun, nature-based ideas. The National Wildlife Foundation curated some simple ways to connect with nature in just 15-30 minute segments (although, they encourage you to spend an hour a day! Hence the name “Green Hour” 😉)  Find activities here.

    • Discover local nature spots: Check out our Nature’s Playbook app to explore some outdoor experiences near you. Here are some that we love in the San Diego Area, but remember that you can filter experiences to location and activity on the app!

    • Visit your local library: Many host special wildlife-related events, especially with Spring around the corner! Check out what’s happening nearby you!

National Parks Need Our Help

Our national parks are facing a staffing crisis, meaning fewer rangers to maintain trails, assist visitors, and protect wildlife. That means we, as outdoor lovers, need to step up. Here’s what you can do:

  • Speak up: Advocate for better funding and staffing by writing to your representatives. The National Parks Conservation Association and Outdoor Alliance have created letter templates you can fill in to voice your concerns about job cuts and decreased resources for maintaining our public lands. ✍️Take action here. or here.

  • Practice Leave No Trace: Keep trails clean, respect wildlife, and minimize your impact. As a reminder, the Seven Principles of Leave No Trace are the following:

    • 1. Plan ahead and prepare.

    • 2. Travel and camp on durable surfaces.

    • 3. Dispose of waste properly.

    • 4. Leave what you find.

    • 5. Minimize campfire impacts.

    • 6. Respect wildlife.

    • 7. Be considerate of others.

You can find more about each of these principles and LNT here

  • Organize cleanups: Grab some friends and help keep your favorite outdoor spots beautiful. You can easily create an event in a Nature’s Playbook group so you can invite and encourage others to join in your efforts!

A Final Thought

As we celebrate World Wildlife Day, let’s remember: “We do not inherit the Earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children.” Every action we take today—big or small—shapes the future of our planet. Let’s invest in wildlife, conservation, and the natural world that sustains us all.

With love,
